The acceptance of the resignation came a day after Amar Singh landed in Mumbai to campaign for Samajwadi Party Maharashtra assembly candidate Farhan Azmi. Farhan is the candidate for the Bhivandi by-poll, the seat that the father and SP Maharashtra president, Abu Azmi vacated.
The two-line letter says: “Dear Amar Singhji, with a heavy heart we accept the resignation you tendered from all posts of Samajwadi Party on January 6, 2010. You have made immense efforts in strengthening the party and for this I will be indebted to you forever.”
The state president, Akhilesh Yadav confirmed the news and said that there was a general consensus on which the national president took the decision. Akhilesh said: “The decision has been taken after discussions with senior party leaders. The state parliamentary board meeting that was held on Friday in Lucknow. All the top leaders said that the goings-on were harming the party and it would be in the interest of the party to accept the resignation. Then the national leaders too held the same view.”
Both Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav are in Saifai (Etawah) where the Saifai festival is on.
Akhilesh said: “Now the party would regroup. We will have to start infusing fresh strength into the party and we are now bracing ourselves up for the January 19 agitation.”
On January 19 the Samajwadi Party has announced an agitation against the state government where the national president, Mulayam Singh Yadav would court arrest while leading the agitation in Lucknow. Akhilesh would lead the agitation in Kanpur while Mulayam’s brother Shivpal Yadav would be in frontline in Bareilly. The statewide agitation is against Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) “misrule” in the state.
