Fire guts mattress factory

Raw material for making cushions and equipment worth lakhs was damaged in a major fire that broke out in a mattress manufacturing unit at Hingna MIDC area early on Sunday. No person was injured in the mishap, said divisional fire officer, MIDC Hingna, Mahendra Kadam. The fire erupted due to an explosion in one of the boilers at the factory, said the officer.


Kadam told TOI that at around 5.15am a fire broke out in Aerocom Cushion Private Limited at Hingna MIDC. The divisional fire officer suspects that workers in the company had failed to maintain the temperature of the boiler, leading to the fire. As coir is combustible, the fire soon took a devastating turn. On being informed, two fire tenders from MIDC Hingna and one tender from the city's fire and emergency services department reached there. Firemen took around three hours to douse the flame. But by then raw material and equipment worth lakhs had been destroyed.
