Mafsu VC selection panel begins work

The Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University ( Mafsu) will get a new vice chancellor soon. The university has been operating without a regular head since May last year when former vice chancellor Arun Ninawe was ousted on corruption charges.

Governor-cum-chancellor K Sankaranarayanan had recently appointed a search panel for selection of new VC under former chief justice of Orissa High Court Bilal Nazki. Director and VC of Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) MC Sharma and state animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries secretary Anil Diggikar were named as the other two members on the panel. The panel recently convened its first meeting and finalised the dates of advertisement for inviting applications from interested candidates, sources said.

The panel will scrutinise applications and after conducting presentation-cum-interaction session with the eligible candidates, it will recommend five names to the chancellor. The chancellor will then appoint the suitable candidate after conducting their interviews.

The city-based university, which offers bachelor's and masters degrees in veterinary, animal husbandry and fisheries, with ten colleges affiliated to it was in the thick of controversies since its inception due to allegations of large-scale irregularities in appointments to over 400 posts. Teaching and non-teaching employees had complained to the governor against alleged victimisation by Ninawe and his corrupt practices, and a case was also filed in the high court.
