NMC panel okays snorkel for fire brigade

Nagpur Municipal Corporation standing committee on Tuesday gave its nod to much awaited proposal of NMC fire department to procure a 42-metre turn table ladder, or snorkel, that would enable rescue and fire fighting operations in high-rise buildings.

The NMC's fire and emergency services department in its recently submitted reply to state government had admitted that the city had 566 high-rise buildings (above 15m), while 343 tall structures below this height and all of them were vulnerable to fire mishap. The department had also demanded a snorkel that would enable fire fighting and rescue operations in these buildings in case of fire accidents.

NMC chief fire officer Chandrashekhar Jadhav informed that standing committee chairman Sandeep Joshi had earmarked Rs 7 crore for purchase of 10 fire tenders and a snorkel in budget for 20010-11. "The NMC general body has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the purchase of ten fire tenders, of which Rs 59.97 lakh were spent on buying six chassis while Rs 30 lakh will be spent on buying four chassis for smaller tenders. These are being bought from Eicher Motors. The fire department will be left with Rs 1.28 crore for fabrication of the tenders," he stated.

"Earlier, administration had approved purchase of an Indian-made snorkel that would cost about Rs 5 crore. Gurgaon-based company Liftmake evinced interest in supplying the machine. However, municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal recommended purchase of a foreign-made snorkel," Jadhav stated. "Soon we will invite tenders from companies to procure it," he added.

Jadhav further said that the city required at least 22 fire stations. However, at present it has only eight fire stations. Against the sanctioned strength of 58 vehicles, the department has only 18 fire-fighting vehicles in working condition.

In another development, following complaints about the pathetic conditions of roads that were constructed or repaired just a few months ago, standing Joshi asked NMC chief engineer A N Shambharkar to investigate the construction quality of all roads constructed or repaired in the last three months and present a report in next 15 days to the panel.
