College News :- Irked over batchmate's death,YCCE students create ruckus

Irked over batchmate's death,YCCE students create ruckus Angry over their batchmate's death due to the alleged negligence of the college and delay in calling ambulance to take him to a hospital, students of Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering (YCCE) set the hostel warden's vehicle on fire and ransacked his office at Wanadongri off Hingna Road on Tuesday morning.

Students turned violent after they lost their friend Sitanshu Tiwari due to a severe asthmatic attack on Monday night. A native of Patna, Sitanshu (21) was a third year student of civil engineering and was staying at the hostel in the college campus.
Students alleged that the hostel warden showed no urgency in calling the college ambulance that caused Sitanshu's death, an asthma patient. Enraged after seeing their batchmate lose life, the students gave vent to their rage by creating ruckus. Around 11pm on Monday, Sitanshu suffered an asthmatic attack in his hostel room. Since his condition was getting serious, the students immediately informed hostel warden Ashok Wabgaonkar. One of the students said that Wabgaonkar initially said that he had called the ambulance. "However, when the ambulance did not reach even after fifteen minutes, I rushed to Wabgaonkar's office only to get the same reply," he said, adding that the ambulance did not come even after Sitanshu fainted. Students said that they had requested Wabgaonkar to give his four-wheeler parked on the premises, but to no avail. Students alleged that Wabgaonkar did not care to personally see Sitanshu's condition. However, sources said that Wabgaonkar thought that it was students' prank and even locked one of the rooms.
The ambulance finally reached at 11.40pm. Sitanshu was rushed to the nearby Lata Mangeshkar Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Students said that he was breathing in the vehicle but was declared dead after a few minutes in the hospital. They alleged that the ambulance meant for any emergency in the college was parked in the campus at a walking distance from the hostel. It should have taken not more than five minutes to reach the room. But the warden took the matter lightly and delayed calling the ambulance, claimed another student. Despite the college charging special fees for providing medical facilities, the ambulance was not made available in time that led to Sitanshu's death, the students claimed.

Panicked students not ready to accept their friend's death rushed Sitanshu to a private hospital but were told that he was no more.

"Had the warden taken the matter seriously, Sitanshu could have been saved," claimed students. After the doctors at Lata Mangeshkar Hospital asked to conduct postmortem, the police took Sitanshu's body to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Sitanshu's death came as a shock to his parents, Dineshkumar, a senior clerk in the railways and Vidya.

MIDC police have registered a case of accidental death. However, students demanded that the cops should register a case of murder.

When college lecturers were contacted on Tuesday night, they said that they had no idea of the incident and refused to give the telephone numbers of their higher-ups.

TOI University News :- Early exit for depleted NU team

Known for their lackadaisical approach in conducting and promoting various sporting activities, officials of Nagpur University gave basketball players of the region plenty of embarrassment in Jaipur.
With a second string squad, varsity men's team got a sound 25-point thrashing at the hands of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, in their opening tie of the West Zone Inter-University Basketball Championship at Jaipur, Rajasthan. The 46-71 humiliation that Nagpur University - the 2007 champions - suffered has eventually saw their exit from the all-important event.
Prior to the tourney in a selection goof-up, the five-member committee - appointed to pick the NU team - did not select a single member of the champion team, GH Raisoni College of Engineering, that won the inter-college championship which was held at the Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana courts early this month.

During the three-day selection trials, the officials allegedly did not treat the 40 odd players well. This indifferent attitude forced some of the aspiring cagers to back out from the trials.

Current national cager Parag Shirbhayye, who won the best shooter award during the West Zone tourney in 2007, too was not spared by the selectors. Parag, who led the Raisoni team to triumph, eventually decided to not to go with the team. In a chat with TOI Parag, the only senior cager who attended the trials, said, "Yes, I opted out of the team."

Explaining the reason, he added, "due to the compulsory industrial visit of my college, I took permission for a day's off from the selectors. The next day, however, I came for the trials but was late by five minutes. To my surprise I was punished and asked to wait for 50 minutes."

"Do I deserve such a treatment in front of my juniors?" queried Parag.

As a player, varsity lacks in fulfilling some basic needs and at the same time treats its players badly. Then how can one expect a good performance, questioned one of the former university stars.

When Rajesh Alone, chairman of selection committee, was asked why not a single Raisoni player from the three that attended the trials, was not selected, he gave a very dubious answer. "Raisoni's best cager Parag didn't give the trials at all and the other two, Gaurav Sood and Sunay Jaiswal, were not better than the selected ones, hence no one was selected," stated Alone.

Sports officer of Raisoni College, Inderjeet Singh Randhawa, too was furious with this decision. "Despite winning the championship, we got a shocking treatment," quipped Randhawa.

After all such blunders, the 12-member NU team was selected for the west zone tourney with five stand byes. However, six players withdrew and hours before the team's departure, selectors added Siddhesh Ingole of YCCE to the team.

The 12th man too faced a bit of mental torture from the authorities. Minutes before his departure, Siddhesh was called in the director's office only to be told that he is not allowed to go with the team. The shocking decision united all his teammates who fought with the authorities.

Finally, when chairman of the department of sports Nagpur University, Babanrao Taywade, came to know about such a bad treatment he utilised his powers and gave justice to Siddhesh.

The off the field activities perhaps affected the morale of the players as they ousted in the first round.

The quarterwise scores in favour of Kolhapur read 18-8, 17-11, 11-12, 25-14. Skipper Akshay Belwalkar (14) top scored for Nagpur, while Rohit Pisipati and Nakul Ghate scored 12 points apiece.

Several attempts to contact Dhananjay Welukar, director of the sports department, went in vain.

TOI UNIVERSITY NEWS :- Tainted ex-dean removed from NU Senate

Tainted ex-dean removed from NU Senate The former dean of commerce faculty Dilip Vairagade, who has held key posts on various statutory bodies including the Nagpur University Senate, academic council, management council, Board of Examination and Research Recognition Committee etc for close to a decade, was removed as Senate member.

Vairagade is accused of using unfair means while appearing for MA exam in 1997. Sources said NU's Disciplinary Action Committee punished Vairagade with two attempts. Vairagade contested NU polls in 2001, but was disqualified by the then returning officer for his tainted past under Section 44(e) of Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994.Vairagade to file appeal against NU order

Vairagade had challenged the returning officer's decision to disqualify him from NU polls before the civil court which ordered a stay in 2001. On this basis and long pendency of the case, he enjoyed two terms on important positions and took many decisions, sources informed.

The NU registrar Mahesh Yenkie confirmed that Vairagade was removed after the court dismissed a civil suit challenging the university's action of disqualifying him from membership of different NU bodies. The judgment came on August 22 after which the action was initiated.

The September 29 order (a copy of which is with the TOI) states that "Vairagade's name stands deleted from the list of Senate members". The order also mentioned that he was permitted to participate and contest various NU polls in 2001, 2005 and this year, subject to the civil suit outcome. Sources alleged that Vairagade had forced himself on various Local Enquiry Committees of the University for granting first-time affiliation to new colleges. There were allegations against him of being involved in various irregularities and seeking favours from the college managements in lieu of affiliations, sources alleged. Vairagade categorically denied all allegations to TOI. He said Section 44(e) didn't apply in his case. "I'll file an appeal against this decision which is injustice on part of NU bosses," he said.
